Volunteers Needed for Weekly Water Monitoring of Local Swimming Holes
The NRWA is looking for individuals to assist with this weekly sampling program to monitor water quality in various swimming locations where towns and the state are not monitoring the water quality for secondary contact recreation (swimming, fishing, kayaking, boating, etc), and where E. coli bacteria levels are potentially high. Monitoring E. coli levels helps us assess the safety of recreational water activities because E. coli is an indicator organism for harmful pathogens like bacteria, viruses, and parasites. Exposure to contaminated water can lead to gastrointestinal illnesses, skin infections, respiratory problems, or more serious waterborne diseases.

Details: Volunteers will spend 1 to 2 hours each week from June to August (likely Wednesdays) collecting samples and bringing them to Lawrence Academy at 44 Main Street in Groton, between 9:00 and 10:00 am in the morning. Sampling sites will be assigned for greatest convenience for our volunteers. This is a great learning experience. Interested individuals should email Utkir Adkhamov, NRWA Water Quality and Ecological Restoration Associate. This project is funded by grants from the National Park Foundation and the Greater Lowell Community Foundation.
