2026 NRWA Water Programs Internship (Paid)
Nashua River Watershed Association
The Nashua River Watershed Association (NRWA), founded in 1969, is an environmental nonprofit organization whose mission is to promote a healthy ecosystem with clean water and protected open spaces for both human and wildlife communities. Thirty-one towns in central Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire make up the Nashua River watershed. NRWA works through programs focused on Water Protection, Land Protection, and Environmental Education.
Internship Overview
The Nashua River Watershed Association is seeking a Spring and Summer 2026 Water Programs Intern to support ongoing water programs activities and contribute to the development of NRWA water monitoring programs. The intern will work closely with the Water Programs Director and the Senior Water Quality Associate and will gain hands-on experience in watershed science, water quality monitoring, and ecological restoration.
Responsibilities
The intern will assist with several water monitoring and restoration activities, including:
- Provide field and lab assistance during sampling events
- Participation in dam removal and culvert restoration projects
- Assist with field maintenance and quality control for continuous water quality loggers
- Conduct nutrient sampling at several locations during the spring and summer
- Support E. coli bacteria monitoring for the Swimming Hole Monitoring Program
- Participate in water chestnut removal events as part of the Adopt a River Program
- Assist with data entry and analysis for weekly, monthly, and continuous water quality monitoring programs
- Field work may require hiking to remote sampling locations and working in uneven terrain and varying weather conditions. Applicants should be comfortable with physically demanding outdoor work.
Hours and Location
The internship will run from early April through August 31, 2026, for up to 20 hours per week. The position will be based at the NRWA River Resource Center in Groton, Massachusetts, with a weekly schedule established with the Water Programs Director. This is a paid internship.
Sampling events, water chestnut pulls, and other volunteer activities often occur on weekends. The intern should expect to work two weekend mornings per month for water quality monitoring events, typically held on the third weekend of the month. Occasional evening hours for meetings, training sessions, or volunteer events may also be required. Because many sampling locations are throughout the watershed and not accessible by public transportation, applicants should have access to a reliable vehicle.
Application
Please submit a cover letter and resume by April 15, 2026. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled. Preference will be given to applicants who are available for the entire internship period and who can begin in April. Reduced hours in April or May may be possible depending on the applicant schedule, but the intern must be available for up to 20 hours per week during June, July, and August, which is the busiest field season.
Applications should be sent to:
