The Upward Bound Math & Science (UBMS) Summer Academy is an immersive residential program designed to prepare first-generation and low-income high school students for college and careers in STEM fields. Students participate in rigorous academic coursework, hands-on STEM activities, and college-readiness workshops while residing on a college campus.
We are looking for motivated and compassionate Academic Residential Assistants (ARAs) to provide leadership, support, and supervision to students during the summer academy. RAs are essential in creating a positive, structured, and safe residential environment for students while also encouraging academic and personal growth.
Responsibilities:
- Supervise and mentor a cohort of students in a residential setting.
- Enforce program rules, safety procedures, and residence hall policies.
- Plan and lead evening activities, including team-building exercises and recreational events.
- Encourage student participation in both academic and extracurricular activities.
- Serve as a role model, encouraging student participation and positive behavior.
- Conduct nightly check-ins, room checks, and address student concerns.
- Collaborate with program staff and provide support for special events.
- Respond to student emergencies and communicate concerns to program leadership.
- Maintain regular communication with program staff, faculty, and students.
- Address student concerns or conflicts and escalate issues to appropriate staff as necessary.
- Attend all staff meetings and maintain required records
Requirements:
- Minimum 18 years old and completed at least two years of college.
- Passion for working with disadvantaged populations
- Prior experience working with youth in an educational, mentoring, or residential setting
- Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work effectively in both team and independent settings.
- Must be available to live on campus for the duration of the program.
- Must be able to satisfactorily pass a CORI and SORI check
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bilingual ability is a plus
- Valid driver's license and willingness to drive a 15 passenger van is a plus
Additional Information:
Shift Information:
- Mondays - Thursdays: 1:00pm - 5:30pm; 6:30pm - 10:00pm
- Fridays: (Field Trips) 8:00am - 12:00pm; 1:00pm - 5:00pm
- Academic Residential Assistants earn a salary of $4000, paid in bi-weekly installments.
- Non benefitted contractor position.
Additional Info:
- CPR, emergency management, and other training provided.
- Room & board provided (approximate value: $2,680). Meals are not provided during weekends and when program is closed.
- Overnight position available if preferred.
Summer Schedule:
- Program Dates: June 20 - August 2, 2025 (residency required)
- June 23 - June 27: 9:00am - 12:00pm, 1:00pm - 6:00pm - Staff Training
- June 30: Students move in
- June 29 - July 25: (Closed July 3 and 4)
- Mondays - Thursdays: 1:00pm - 5:30pm; 6:30pm - 10:00pm
- Fridays: (Field Trips) 8:00am - 12:00pm; 1:00pm - 5:00pm
- July 28 - July 31: Special Events / Field Trips (as scheduled)*
- August 2: Staff move out
