Microplastics in Our Local Freshwater Streams and Fish
Thursday, March 9, 2023 at 7:00 p.m. on Zoom
Plastic pollution is an important environmental problem in rivers and streams. Tiny fragments called microplastics are a newer, and growing, concern. Dr. Daniel Welsh will share his findings on microplastics in the streams of the Nashua River watershed and also in a common fish species found in the watershed. He will discuss what microplastics are, why they are a problem, and also talk about his research measuring microplastics in our local watershed. Dr. Welsh is an Associate Professor of Biology in the Biology and Chemistry Department at Fitchburg State University. He teaches courses in Anatomy and Physiology, Evolution, and Animal Behavior. His research interests focus on developing a broad understanding of how fish adapt to changes in their environment. Daniel has a Ph.D. in Biology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
