Aquatic Insect Investigation for Families
Sunday, October 17 from noon to 1:00 p.m.
Along the MA Central Rail Trail in Sterling, MA
Beneath the surface of our rivers, streams, and ponds, there is hidden an abundant web of life which includes plants, fish, and aquatic insects. Many insects live part of their life in the water as nymphs and emerge to become flying insects as adults. Did you know that dragonflies begin their lives as aquatic insects? Did you know that aquatic insects can be indicators of the water quality in our waterways? Join NRWA educator naturalists for this family-oriented, hands-on investigation of aquatic insects in waterways in Sterling. Participants will become scientific detectives using aquatic nets with collection basins, microscopes, sorting tools, and identification keys to investigate the aquatic insects living in water bodies just off the Rail Trail. Why are these freshwater species so important to the water ecosystem? How do issues with erosion, pollution runoff, and habitat loss impact aquatic insects and other life in a pond or river? Learn how we can protect and improve local water habitats by conserving green spaces along rivers (greenways), and by using local plantings to prevent erosion and runoff. This program is appropriate for children of all ages and adults. Program is free; reservations required as space is limited. To register, email Registration@NashuaRiverWatershed.org, be sure to include your first and last name, the number of people in your group, the ages of any children, and your best phone contact number. For the comfort of all no dogs are allowed. This fall we will continue to follow specific Covid protocols including families maintaining six foot distances and masks when needed during our time together. This free program is supported in part by a grant from the Community Foundation of North Central Massachusetts. Watch your email for additional dates and locations for this program.
